I think the Malay `Hari Natal' probably comes from the Portuguese word `Natal' since historically the Portuguese conquered the Malaccan sultanate in the early 16th century. The Portuguese would probably be the first Christian contact the locals had (I'm no historian but if my memory serves me well, this is what I'd extrapolate from what I remember of my history lessons in school) and it makes sense to use their language for the term Christmas.

Since many of the Malay words for Christian things came from Portuguese, e.g. paderi and gereja, I wouldn't be surprised if "Hari Natal" also came from Portuguese.

As for "Xmas", cdason, I am a committed Christian myself and I use X as an abbreviation for Christ all the time when making quick notes, as well as on my prayer list. I even use "Xian" as an abbreviation for Christian. So I have no problems with Xmas as an abbreviation for Christmas.

As Joshua pointed out, X is the Greek initial for Christus. IX -- Iesous Christus.

Frankly speaking, I find the use of 'Xmas' rather offensive because as you said.. Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Christ.. and putting an X means (in the sms world) not.. so when you say Xmas.. its like saying no-Mass...
