On Sunday 9th March 2008, I woke up tired having just 4 hours of sleep, but jubilant and lifted. It was reminiscent of the feeling I felt as I walked shoulder to shoulder with my fellow Bersih marchers in the rain soaked day of 10 November. I never forget the joy, the hope and the spirit that filled my heart that day. And so was Sunday.
My eyes well with tears of joy when we worshiped God for the miracle He has done on the 8 March 2008. All our prayers (for years) have slowly been answered. We asked for God’s intervention to change this nation, and we received it in a mighty way. Tears flow as I stood in awe and wonder of the hope He has given us.
The results of this Election 2008, is like a rebirth. A rebirth of a nation.
For many years, we have been under the oppressive yoke of racism when the ruling coalition played us as pawn in their divide and rule strategy. They used fear, they used special rights and they used racial parties to demand us to submit to their rule. They divided us and so, divided this nation.
This nation was born in 1957 with the unity of the 3 major races. Somehow, along the way, through corrupt and power-hungry men, this unity has been broken. Along the way, threats and unfair policies have been used to divide us more. What many of us experience is superficial unity and superficial harmony - but more and more polarisation and discrimination.
The polarisation, and discrimination has come to a point where the many of the marginalised reacts either to migrate away or become cynics or worst become apathetic.
Thank God, they are not the majority. Thank God, the majority in this country wants to see change. Thank God, the majority of us want to see a better, stronger and just Malaysia.
Symbolically, on 11 November 2007, we crossed our ‘river Jordan’, as many of us (Malays, Chinese & Indians) were ‘baptized’ into with the fire of unity. And on the 8 March 2008, we conquered ‘our Jericho’, when we brought down what we thought was the impenetrable walls of the ruling Coalition.
Malaysians have achieved what was inconceivable. We have broken the 2/3 majority -something none of our fathers thought was possible. We have freed 5 states - including Perak & Selangor - something none of us in our wildest dreams thought was conceivable. Malaysians have voted as a one, as a people - no more as Chinese, Malay or Indian. We voted as Malaysians. And that broke the rule of fear, the rule of the corrupt and the rule of the lawless.
So 50 years after our Merdeka, through the unity of the 3 major races - Malaysia is reborn.
The work of rebuilding this nation has begun.
