As you are reading this, I hope the water level of The Flood Mark2 subsides.

My parents traveled up to KL fearing the second wave of flooding would trap them in their house. Water & Electricity cuts do reveal how dependent we are of them. They have packed all their belongings up in the first floor of the house in Segamat and locked everything and drove up here on Saturday.

My father showed us a VCD of the flood in Segamat recorded and edited by a professional. I just could not believe my eyes to see the devastation to the town. What is even more sorry is for me to hear what my father reports about the racism and the gangsterism he witnessed.

A caveat before i continue. I am reporting what my father told me - that is hearsay, and it is by no means corroborated. Despite his propensity to exaggerate sometimes, I know that my father would not make some of these things up if it is not true. I am not trying to incite hatred to any race, but merely reporting what i heard. It is my hope and I believe many of us say this hope, that as a nation we can finally be a people blind to race, colour and faiths. However, the reality is .. you know the reality.

1. My father told me that when he asked for help from the military who came in the boat, they said they would come to rescue him after they took care of those in single storey houses. He waited for 2 days, they never came for him. There were others too who tell the same story. And these others where of the same race as my father.

2. According to him, some military officers were asking for a thousand dollars if you need them to rescue your family. Guess which group of people were exhorted?

3. Helicopters could be seen flying around, but none of them really do anything apart from taking photos.

4. People (of a particular race) were looting in the town centers, robbing supermarkets in bright daylight without any police men in sight. Everyone else in town just stood and watch.

5. Some outsiders did not come to help, but to rob those who are living in hotels as safe havens. Many families took all their jewelry and money and stayed in hotels to protect themselves from thieves. Little did they know that the thieves even raid the hotels. Thank God, one hotel guard stopped these “gangsters” from entering the hotel. Not sure if other hotels customers were that fortunate.

6. Government food and money were not distributed equally to all victims but according to their preference and that means other races were not beneficiaries. The other “races” had to find help through the private sector. My father’s request for help and food merely fell on death ears. He had to walk to a Chinese school to have a meal after eating biscuits for 2 days and losing 5 kgs.

7. There was a group of 10 large men of a particular race, who came with huge pickup trucks to a Chinese school were the private sector has donated food, to haul off the food there. They tried to haul off the food in the guise of helping other victims.

8. I was told that the military came with boots and when asked to swim to help the victims, some claim they can’t swim!

While some are helping out the victims, there are those who do selective helping based on race. Then there are those who are opportunistic, came to rob and extort those who are already robbed of so much.

I am totally appalled by the report of the military’s racist bias and their gangsterism. I am sadden by the discriminatory way the government dish out aid.

This disaster shows the true colours of the people of our nation. It is through adversity that we can see whether we view each other as one of our own - without partiality. Victims of the flood are just victims; it should not be further divided along racial lines.

It shows that after 50 years of BN rule, we are not a united nation but divided still along the manner of the component parties.

You would be sure that the people of Segamat will not vote for another Samy’s puppet.
